South County’s Higher Ed Game Just Leveled Up – And It's About Time

by Bern McGovern

For decades, South County has been asking—OK, practically begging—for a university presence that doesn’t require a 30+ mile commute up the 805. Now, the wait might finally be over.

In a big (and honestly kind of unexpected) move, Cal State San Marcos is stepping up in a major way. They just announced they’ll be launching five bachelor’s degree programs at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, starting as soon as 2026. That’s a huge deal for a region of 600,000 people that’s been known as an “education desert”—where access to four-year degrees is pretty limited, especially if you're looking to stay local.

What’s the Plan?

The deal goes like this: students will start as Southwestern College students for their freshman and sophomore years. Then, they’ll transition into CSUSM students for their junior and senior years—all without ever having to leave Chula Vista. No moving. No long commutes. Just solid education in your own backyard.

Starting in 2026, students can earn CSUSM degrees in:

  • Business Administration

  • Computer Information Systems

  • Cybersecurity

And by fall 2027, two more degrees join the lineup:

  • Human Development

  • Bilingual Speech Language Pathology

And that’s just the beginning—CSUSM says more disciplines could follow.

Why This Matters

Let’s be real: this region has needed this for a long time. Chula Vista leaders have spent 30 years trying to attract a university. They even set aside land for one! But instead of waiting for another big campus to magically appear, Southwestern and CSUSM decided to meet students where they are.

These degrees aren’t just feel-good programs either. They’re aimed at jobs that are in demand right now—like IT, health care, speech pathology, hospitality, and construction management. With thousands of new homes coming to Otay Ranch and a booming tourism scene thanks to the new $1.3 billion Gaylord Pacific Resort, there’s going to be a serious need for local talent.

The Bigger Picture

This partnership is just one sign that both schools are thriving while other colleges across the country are struggling. CSUSM is planning a new $110 million science and engineering center and growing fast. Southwestern just hit record enrollment and is opening a new student union tailored for university partnerships like this one.

Oh—and there’s even talk of expanding across the border. Southwestern is launching a culinary science program in Baja California, and CSUSM may not be far behind.

Final Thoughts

This move by Cal State San Marcos could be a turning point for South County. It gives local students a real shot at earning a four-year degree without leaving home—and better yet, in fields that match the region’s future. It’s a win for students, for families, and for a community that’s been overlooked for far too long.

Now the only question is: which local coffee shop is going to become the new go-to study spot?
